A friend of mine passed along a great idea which I used with my children, ages 6 and 4, this Christmas season. I wrapped up one holiday and/or winter book for every day of Advent. Most of the books were ones I already own, but I did buy a few new ones to add excitement. Every night, one book was unwrapped and read with my kids. My kids LOVED doing this! It sure made getting them ready for bed easy.
This idea could be used at other times of the year in other situations. Here's a few ideas:
1. Around Easter, put titles of books in plastic eggs. Put the eggs in an Easter basket. When they open the egg and read the title(or you read the title), they can go to the bookshelf and find the Spring/Easter book.
2. When you are going on a long road trip, wrap several of your children's favorite books, and open one every day, or one every 100 miles, etc.
3. The week before school starts, wrap books with a "Back to school" theme.
4. If your kids are starting to read, have THEM pick a few books that they know how to read and wrap them up. Then, when it is time for them to practice reading, they can unwrap a book to read.
