Last night, the kids and I watched the first episode of Martha Speaks . Josh, age 5, liked it. It was rather funny in parts. Megan, age 2, lost interest after a few minutes. The first half of the episode told the story of the book Martha Speaks. I am not sure if other show story lines will follow some of the other published sequels to Martha Speaks.
One of the major goals of the TV show is to teach children vocabulary words, which is extremely important for reading comprehension. I liked the way the episode's new vocabulary words all centered around a theme. Yesterday's theme was communication words. I hope they continue to keep each episode's words in themes. If you watch this show with your child, be sure to use the words in your conversations. Also, you and your child could brainstorm and discuss more words centered around the day's theme.
